Political leaders met in Amherst Tuesday to discuss the future of the Chignecto Isthmus.
The Chignecto Isthmus connects New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and is a major transportation corridor. It is an area which is vulnerable to flooding, severe storms and sea level rise, especially in this time of climate change.
Senator Jim Quinn called the meeting with mayors Andrew Black and David Kogon, MLAs Megan Mitton and Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin, as well Acadian and Mi’kmaq representatives.
Quinn asked leaders to help garner support in the House of Commons for his bill S-273, which would see the federal government take jurisdiction over the Isthmus dyke system.
“I encourage people to make sure that their elected members of parliament are aware of this file so that they don’t come back in September and are wondering what this is all about,” said Quinn. “Now’s the time to start educating.”
