Dalhousie University students from Halifax visited Sydney yesterday inspecting child passenger seats. They’re trained on proper installation and determining the best size seat for a child.
The students were trained by technician Katherine Hutka who travels with the group overseeing the inspections. They’ve already inspected about 700 seats in other Nova Scotia communities with about half receiving approval. Hutka says one of the biggest problems is parents moving their kids out of a booster seat too soon.
The goal is to eventually release a province-wide educational campaign promoting safe travel for children.
Police set up a checkpoint recommending drivers with child passenger seats to pull over so the students could have a look. In one hour, seven vehicles pulled over for an inspection. One was approved while others had seats too big or small or they weren’t fastened correctly.
