Mayor Jody Stone of Stanstead has announced a revitalization project for the historic Border Theatre, a cultural landmark with roots dating back to 1912.
Montreal businessman Gabriel Safdie and his wife Eva have been key figures in this initiative. They have invested significantly in Stanstead, donating the Border Theatre to the non-profit organization Centre d’arts de Stanstead to facilitate its renovation for community use.
The project has secured a $2.1 million federal grant focused on environmentally sustainable renovations. Despite this substantial funding, additional local support and financial contributions are necessary to fully realize the project. The renovation plans include modernizing the exterior while preserving the theatre’s historic dome interior.
Situated near the Vermont border, the theatre’s revival is expected to enhance tourism, positioning Stanstead as a cultural hub. Mayor Stone believes this initiative will not only attract more visitors but also inspire further investments in Stanstead’s downtown area, thereby revitalizing the community and celebrating its rich cultural heritage.
