Last year, the Métis Capital Housing Corporation proposed constructing a new 36-unit affordable Indigenous seniors lodge at the sight of the former Nihgi Seniors Lodge in the community of Montrose.
According to the City of Edmonton, the Métis Capital Housing Corporation applied to the City’s Indigenous Housing Grant Program to help with the estimated $9.2 million construction cost. After following through the Indigenous Housing Grant Guide, $2.29 million will be contributed to the project after a unanimous vote from city councilors during a March 20 city council meeting.
In exchange with the funding, Métis Capital Housing Corporation will enter an affordable housing agreement with the City for a 40-year term.
The lodge, located at at 11935 65 Street NW, is expected to commence construction later this year and potentially open next spring.
