The Town of Minto heard from a group of citizens who want to ban any flags or banners representing anything other than the Minto and Canadian flag from public spaces.
The group presented a petition to council with 900 signatures that also called rainbow crosswalks in support of the LGBTQ2S+ community to be banned. A delegation of petition organizers claimed the goal was to ensure that all public spaces remain politically neutral.
A resident accused the group of being “deceitful,” calling that rationale a cover for hate and discrimination against the LGBTQ2S+ community.
Council also heard there were some citizens who signed the petition without understanding why. One woman who wanted her name removed from it says she was told it was to get “a new crosswalk in Harriston for the kids.”
Minto Council is in the process of creating a banner policy which is expected to come before council in the next couple of meetings.
