Peterborough-Nogojiwanong Pride organizers made the last-minute decision to cancel the alcoholic beverage area at the Pride in the Park event, which takes place on Sept. 28 in Millennium Park, after receiving notice that two uniformed Peterborough Police officers would need to be present.
During past years, Peterborough Pride has hired private security guards for the “beer tent” at Pride in the Park, says Rick Lambert, member of the Peterborough Pride planning committee.
According to Peterborough Police Services, the policy that requires a minimum of two uniformed police officers to be stationed at events that serve alcohol has been in place for over 20 years. Lambert says this is the first time in “over ten years” that it has been enforced for their event.
“It’s an adjustment, but there are some good sides to it,” says Lambert. “Pride in the Park is not just about a beer tent.”
