As a -16 C cold front barreled towards Vancouver, Crab Park encampment fortified their structures. Advocate, Fiona York, says that the Park Board warned of inspections and possible removal of temporary structures on Jan. 7.
CFRO reached out to the Parks Board who said that both “the Bylaw requirements and operational guidelines have been discussed with people in the daytime area” of Crab Park. According to the board, “approximately 20 are currently non-compliant” and stressed they are not asking people to leave but to comply with By-law 11B.
While Jan. 7 came and went with no action there, on Jan. 9, the Parks Board descended on Oppenheimer. According to Lisa Steacy from CTV News, tents were torn down, bikes confiscated, blankets and personal items tossed out, and unhoused people unable to protect themself from the extreme weather forecasted for that afternoon.
