Ottawa Riverkeeper, a charity group dedicated to protecting and promoting the Ottawa River watershed, is seeking the public’s help in monitoring algae blooms.
Elizabeth Grater, a science programs coordinator with the group, explained that they monitor the presence of algal blooms throughout the Ottawa River and its tributaries to monitor the health of the ecosystems throughout its vast territory. The community can submit their reports via the group’s survey app or sign up to be a long-term observer by emailing cbm@ottawariverkeeper.ca.
She added that green and blue-green algae are the two types that they track, and they typically appear in slow-moving water during warmer weather.
More information on the algae monitoring is available here.
