Opponents of a proposed fish farm expansion near Liverpool got a big morale boost on Wednesday as Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston told a business luncheon that he personally opposes it.
Houston said that while he is not against aquaculture, he believes Liverpool Bay isn’t the best place for it.
He and Kim Masland, Queens MLA and Nova Scotia’s public works minister, spoke at an event organized by the South Queens Chamber of Commerce. About 80 Liverpool businesspeople and others applauded the premier’s remarks.
Kelly Cove Salmon has applied to expand its operations near Coffin Island, and to add two new sites off Brooklyn and Mersey Point to 60 pens from 14.
The Nova Scotia Aquaculture Review Board will hold public hearings on the application beginning March 4. The premier said he respects that process, and won’t interfere with the board’s deliberations.
