Some doctors in Nova Scotia will be eligible to receive up to $15,000 of annual public funds as part of a retirement program launched by the provincial government in an effort to attract and retain physicians.
According to a release on Wednesday, the new physician retirement fund initiative is based on doctors’ years of service and their annual amount contributed to a retirement savings plan.
Doctors who have worked between five and 15 years will see matched contributions of up to $10,000. Physicians who’ve worked in the province for five years or less are eligible to receive $5,000 annually towards a retirement plan of their choosing without having to make any contribution of their own.
Gehad Gobran, president of Doctors Nova Scotia, said initiatives like these could attract more doctors to Nova Scotia and therefore address the province’s 160,000-person waitlist for a family physician.
He joined CKDU to share his thoughts on the recent announcement.
