Part of the Notre-Dame encampment was cleared Monday morning, after a tense standoff between over 100 protesters and police in riot gear.
The encampment beside the Notre-Dame bike path has been home to a few dozen unhoused residents since the summer. One resident told CKUT she was there because there were no places in shelters. Shelter workers say they turn away dozens every night.
The eviction comes after the local borough put pressure on the province to act on what they describe as multiple bylaw infractions. The Quebec Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility owns the land the encampment is on, though the borough manages it.
Local officials say they lack the resources to meet everyone’s needs. But protesters say that until those resources come, dismantling encampments will put people back onto the street.
