Northumberland County staff say that they plan to continue offering support to encampment members if they are evicted from the former Brookside Youth Detention Centre property in Cobourg. The encampment has been set up on the site since last September, with an estimated 25 residents.
The County is anticipating a forthcoming announcement regarding a sale of the provincially-owned Brookside property. Manager of Homelessness Services Bill Smith and Associate Director of Housing and Homelessness Rebecca Carman addressed County council at its August meeting.
A report states the County is pushing forward with an expedited opening of a new shelter at 310 Division Street in Cobourg to replace Transition House around the corner on Chapel Street.
Cobourg Mayor Lucas Cleveland, who is a County councillor, questioned what the encampment response is and Deputy Warden Olena Hankivsky asked if there is enough shelter space in the event of an eviction.
