Changes to Northumberland County recycling this week won’t impact residents for at least two years.
The county has entered a two-year contract with Circular Materials Ontario that came into effect Monday to extend its current recycling program until the end of 2025. The move was In response to a province-wide transition of responsibility from municipalities and First Nations to the producers of packaging and paper products.
This Friday, Emterra Environmental will take ownership of the County’s Material Recovery Facility in Grafton. The sale was also in anticipation of the provincial transition to produce responsibility and the County announced a conditional offer of purchase from Emterra last March.
Northumberland 89.7 spoke with the County’s associate director of operations for public works Adam McCue about the changes.
