With specialized training above those of regular nurses and the ability to order diagnostic tests and write prescriptions, nurse practitioners have become essential healthcare delivery providers in a growing number of communities across Ontario.
Recently, Haliburton County was fortunate to bring two nurse practitioners to two long-term care facilities here. One is working at Highland Crest – a 62-bed facility in Minden and another at Highland Wood – a 30 bed facility attached to Haliburton Highlands Health Services.
By adding to the army of healthcare professionals in the region, nurse practitioners help take the strain off physicians in our region. CanoeFM recently spoke with Jennifer Burns West, Chief Nursing Executive and VP of Clinic and Community Programs for Haliburton Highlands Health Services. She believes the new NPs are already having a positive impact.
