Grand River Employment and Training Inc. (GRETI) say a new longhouse construction program is currently in development, as the organization continues its effort to rebuild a new longhouse after the previous one was consumed by fire in July 2022.
The announcement came during the March 12 general council meeting.
GRETI CEO Erin Monture says the program is still very much in the development process but would allow for culturally appropriate training and teaching for the Six Nations community.
Monture says the project would likely run concurrently with the organization’s plan to rebuild its previous longhouse, which could take place this summer. GRETI have campaigned since the July 2022 fire, with the hope of gathering enough funds to rebuild the longhouse.
The previous longhouse was used as a classroom, historical site, and hosted workshops and business meetings for organizations.
SNEC moved and accepted GRETI’s presentation as information during the March 12 meeting.
