In an age where social media is filled with shouting matches and broken dialogue, a new debate club in Saint John is bringing back the art of thoughtful discourse.
Matthew Heans and Nathan Law, two founding members of the newly formed UNBSJ debate club, started the group as a way to provide a comfortable, inviting space for those wishing to discuss difficult and contentious ideas. Inspired by the formal debating style of the Oxford Union in Oxford, England, the club’s slogan says it all — “Fighting Ideas, Not People”
The UNBSJ Debate Club held its inaugural debate on October 9th, 2024 and expects to host them biweekly on the UNBSJ campus.
