A citizenship ceremony Saturday morning in Port Hope welcomed 48 people from 13 countries as new Canadians.
The presiding officer was retired Captain Kevin Junor who administered the oath of citizenship to the candidates. Ages ranged from children to seniors, but only those 14 and older were required to recite the oath and did so in english and french.
Dignitaries on hand included Port Hope Mayor and Northumberland County Deputy Warden Olena Hankivsky, Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP and Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini, MP Philip Lawrence and Alderville First Nation Chief Taynar Simpson
They reminded the newest citizens that Canada had been built by settlers and immigrants, and outlined the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship.
