Dr. Tyler McCreary grew up in a part of Smithers, B.C. that was once known as “Indian Town”. In 1967 Smithers council condemned the buildings there and set them ablaze to make way for new motels.
Those stories are retold in McCreary’s first book, Shared Histories. But in his most recent book, Indigenous Legalities, Pipeline Viscosities, the now associate professor of geography at Florida State University explores the long complicated history of Indigenous-colonial conflict in Wet’suwet’en Territory and the resistance against local officials, RCMP and resource companies.
McCreary says although there is still many unresolved conflicts in Wet’suwet’en territory he hopes his research will help shed light on the shared histories of communities and plot a path forward.
