At Nelson’s city council meeting yesterday, Nelson resident and coordinator of the Sue Big Oil West Kootenay Campaign Greg Amos presented to council asking them to join the cause.
According to their website, “Sue Big Oil is a collaboration of ordinary British Columbians concerned about harmful climate change impacts in BC communities, and the skyrocketing costs for BC’s local governments and taxpayers.”
Sue Big Oil is looking to raise $500,000 to begin their campaign; Amos says they are 10 per cent of the way there. Money is raised by asking residents of each city involved to donate $1.
Currently, five BC municipalities have joined: Gibsons, View Royal, Qualicum Beach, Squamish and Slocan.
Nelson city council did not respond whether they will join or not. The matter must first be raised as a delegation, which involves several steps.
