June is Pride Month and to celebrate the 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two-Spirit Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer Intersex Asexual plus) community, the Nanaimo Pride Society is kicking off the month with a week full of events and celebrations.
The Nanaimo Pride Society is hosting a week-long celebration with events, a parade, and a festival.
Lauren Semple, president of the Nanaimo Pride Society, came down to the CHLY station to speak about the events before the kickoff.
Semple says following the protests against the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) programs in schools that took place last year in Nanaimo and across the country, it is important for the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and allies to come together to stop the wave of hate.
She says this year’s pride celebration will have changes to better protect the community from transphobia and homophobia that the Society has been dealing with.
