The Nanaimo Curling Club no longer has to worry about their broken chiller affecting its upcoming season.
Back in June, CHLY first reported about the Nanaimo Curling Club’s 13-year-old broken chiller. While the club had a couple of options for what to do next, the Burnaby Lake Arena reached out to the curling club offering to sell them a refurbished plate and frame chiller. The refurbished chiller was the best and most cost-efficient choice, according to the Nanaimo club.
From there, the club worked with the City of Nanaimo who provided a grant of $67,950 funded by the Strategic Infrastructure Reserve Fund. The club raised $88,500 needed through debentures sold to members.
CHLY attended a Nanaimo Curling Club meeting on July 31, where members approved the issuance of the debentures to replace the existing chiller. CHLY spoke with the president of the Nanaimo Curling Club Tom Weinreich, and long-time curler and club board member Janice Ainsworth.
