NDP leader Claudia Chender held a press conference Wednesday morning to call on the Conservative government to help with affordability for families in N.S.
The three points of concern raised in the news conference were reining in Nova Scotia Power and lowering heating bills; removing unnecessary vehicle inspections and license fees; and providing free school meals for children.
Rent in N.S. was up 11 per cent for a two-bedroom apartment in 2023 and energy rates saw an increase of 6.5 per cent at the beginning of 2024.
Janet Brush, a 77-year-old resident in Halifax, spoke during the conference about her struggles with the rising costs of living.
“I spend 48.5 per cent of my income on rent now,” Brush said. “So every month, I’ve got less money for other things, recreation, food, medication, travel.”
Chender says these changes will help Nova Scotians with cost of living.
