After a warm and dry October, Montreal’s weather has finally turned chilly.
But John Gyakum, professor in McGill’s department of atmospheric and oceanic sciences, says November’s weather is still nowhere near as cold as we might expect.
The culprit? Warming ocean waters in high latitudes – which also contributed to making this past October the second warmest on record globally. He says this is “very likely” due to climate change.
He says it’s also likely that we’ll get another warmer-than-average winter. But this is no reason to rejoice, as changing snow patterns could have big impacts in the province – including on hydroelectric power generation.
