Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante announced on Wednesday that she’s not running for reelection in 2025.
Speaking in front of reporters and high-level officials, she said that although being Montreal’s mayor has been a privilege, she won’t be able to bring the same energy to four more years of the job.
Plante has served two terms as mayor since 2017, and has been the leader of Projet Montreal since late 2016. She said a party leadership contest would begin in the coming months.
Aref Salem, Leader of the Official Opposition at Montreal City Hall, thanked Plante for her commitment to the metropolis since her election, despite their “many disagreements on the management of construction sites, homelessness, public safety and the state of services to citizens.”
