On Thursday, Mayor Valerie Plante unveiled a new warming centre in the Lucien Saulnier building, just next to city hall.
Lit by fluorescent lights and holding 30 plastic deck chairs, the centre is an ad-hoc effort to keep Montrealers warm over the cold winter months.
So far, the city has spent around $20,000 on converting the site in the back of the municipal building – and it will cost even more to run.
Plante says that although the province rejected the site, she’s hoping that they’ll foot the bill once it’s up and running. A spokesperson for Social Services Minister Lionel Carmant did not confirm whether they would.
