Over 50 residents of Memramcook packed the village council chamber on Tuesday night to voice their opposition to a rezoning that could make way for another gravel quarry in their midst.
Marlene Robertson shares a property line with the excavation company who purchased the property in February this year, and immediately started clearing the land. “We didn’t know what was going on,” says Robertson, “and it just got worse and worse. And we complained, we called, they bounced us from one department to another. Nobody wanted to help.”
After a four-hour public hearing with dozens of letters and presentations, Memramcook mayor Maxime Bourgeois decided to adjourn the matter until a future meeting, to allow time for further information to be gathered on the environmental impacts of the quarry.
