In downtown Montreal, workers are breaking ground on new “affordable” housing for students.
By fall 2026, the corner of Rue Ontario and Saint Laurent will be home to a thirteen-story building with 168 apartments at below-market rates. The project should house just shy of 300 students. McGill students will get priority access to units thanks to a $1.5 million donation.
The Meridien project is the third in Montreal for UTILE, a non-profit owner that develops and manages a portfolio of student apartments throughout the province.
Mayor Valerie Plante told reporters she’ll update Montrealers on her housing strategy, and progress on social and affordable housing goals, in the coming weeks.
