After more than two weeks, McGill University is taking legal action against the pro-Palestine encampment on its campus.
On Friday, McGill announced they’re seeking an injunction against the Popular University Encampment in a written message from Principal Deep Saini to the community.
The encampment is calling for the university to divest from companies and cut ties with universities complicit in the war in Gaza and illegal occupation of the West Bank.
If granted, the injunction would allow the Montreal police to forcibly clear out protestors who have fenced off part of McGill’s Lower Field and put up dozens of tents. The request comes after a previous injunction requested by two students, which sought to ban protest within 100 metres of campus, was rejected by the courts.
McGill University has not been speaking to the press until a decision is rendered. But CKUT was present at the campers’ emergency press conference Friday evening, and is currently present at the court hearings, which began Monday morning.
