Loyalist Township has opted out of providing contracted collection services and depot collection services for blue box materials between July 1, 2025 and Dec. 31, 2025. The township’s current collection contract with Waste Connections expires on July 1, 2025.
Ontario’s existing waste diversion programs are transitioning to a producer responsibility model. During the transition period, municipalities have the option to opt in or out of providing recycling services on behalf of Circular Materials Ontario (CMO). Communities that opt out will shift the obligation for arranging and providing curbside and depot collection services to CMO.
In 2026, producers will have full responsibility for the collection, transportation, processing and sale of recyclable materials throughout Ontario. Loyalist Township has been designated a producer because it supplies paper products to residents.
CMO is developing a promotion and education campaign to inform the public of changes to the blue box program and how it will affect them.
