Public Energy Inc. is looking at converting the old Kingston Generation plant in Loyalist Township into North America’s first hydrogen peaking plant. This type of plant produces hydrogen at night using cheap energy and stores it to be sold when needed. The company presented council with plans at their year-end meeting.
The plan noted an investment into Loyalist Township of $400 million, and potential for nearly 130 jobs in the area.
Representatives for the company noted there are still many steps to complete before bringing anything official to council for consideration. The retired plant is located on Taylor Kidd Boulevard, and has access to Lake Ontario. If converted, it would be renamed to better acknowledge its location in Loyalist Township.
The company noted support from Premier Doug Ford, the ministry of energy, and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO.) They also noted interest from large global manufacturers.
