On October 21, Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation proposed Bill 212 – the “Reducing Gridlock, Saving you Time Act.” This act would implement a number of changes to “fight gridlock and get drivers where they need to go faster,” including additional restrictions to bike lanes in Ontario.
Cycling advocates across the province found issues with the proposed legislation; CFFF met with one advocate, Jean Greig, program manager for B!KE: The Peterborough Community Bike Shop.
Greig shared that the aspect of the bill cycling advocates are focusing on is that any new bike lane construction “that would impact or remove a marked lane of motor vehicle travel must pass through provincial approval.”
Greig describes Bill 212 as a “step backwards” for cycling in Ontario; Greig believes that bike lanes would actually reduce motor vehicle traffic, and it is safer for cyclists.
