The SPA de l’estrie is reporting that things have improved at the local shelter following the provincial moving day July 1 when there was a surge of animals abandoned.
“Things are a bit better, but we still have around 250 animals under our care, including 80 cats, 20 dogs, and about 10 small animals available for adoption,” says Alexis Savoie, the SPA de l’estrie spokesperson.
Savoie explained that July 1 is a critical time for shelters, with dozens of animals rescued daily. The SPA relies on about 200 foster families for support during this period.
The shelter faces significant costs, spending around $75,000 monthly on veterinary care and $30,000 on food.
Savoie highlighted the importance of donations and adoptions. For those considering surrendering pets, he advises exploring personal networks first.
