Bigger libraries in communities with a larger tax base to find library initiatives have a responsibility to help smaller, more rural libraries in the province, according to Leigh Anne Palmer, Executive Director of the Public Library Interlink Foundation (PLIF). And smaller, more rural libraries in the province, are “happy to serve as that connector, enabling individual libraries to do more because they’re doing it together.”
The PLIF has been supporting public libraries across the province since 1994 with resource sharing and collaborative programs to service urban and rural libraries. These resources include summer programs for kids, expertise and programming to promote literacy and finding new ways to keep people interested in reading and learning.
As another example of how they serve as a community connector, the PLIF is hosting an author series which is focusing on Indigenous voices in 2024 and tonight (Tuesday, November 12th) they are offering a reading and discussion with Sucker Creek First Nation in Treaty 8 Territory in northern Alberta, Jessica Johns.
