Around 200 workers at Amazon’s DXT4 warehouse in Laval have had their union ratified by Quebec’s labour tribunal (TAT). It’s the first Amazon union in Canada, and comes after an unsuccessful attempt to unionize another Amazon warehouse in Lachine, on the island of Montreal.
CKUT spoke with Caroline Senneville, president of the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN). Senneville says the new Amazon union will fight for better wages and safer working conditions.
Amazon has appealed the ruling. When reached by CKUT, Amazon spokesperson Barbara M Agrait provided the following statement: “As a company, we don’t think unions are the best option for our employees. We favor opportunities for each person to be respected and valued as an individual, and to have their unique voice heard by working directly with our team.”
CKUT will follow this story as it develops.
