Friends of Cortes Island (FOCI) is partnering with Klahoose Shellfish Limited and the Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) to conduct a first ever, island-wide beach cleanup during May.
Last year, FOCI collected two truckloads worth of waste from one beach. Organizers say the collaboration will help the island to increase their capacity for the cleanup and to properly dispose of waste.
Residents are encouraged to collect garbage on their beach walks and deposit them in “super sacks” available at sites in Tyber Bay, Treedom, Hanks Beach, Hayes Road Beach Access, Hollyhock, Mansons Landing Government Dock, Plunger Pass beach access at Seavista Road, and the Cortes Waste Management Center.
Klahoose Aquaculture Center will host a volunteer event June 8-9 to deposit and sort the recyclables; waste will be shipped off island by the CSWM. The weekend was picked because June 8 is World Ocean Day.
