The Kitsumkalum Treaty was initialed on June 25, marking an advancement in the nation-to-nation relationship between Kitsumkalum First Nation, the Government of Canada, and the Government of British Columbia according to treaty partners.
The Kitsumkalum Treaty is influenced by principles from the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). The treaty will focus on preserving Kitsumkalum’s culture and spiritual practices while advancing the nation’s autonomy.
Federal Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations Gary Anandasangaree and BC Minister of Indigenous Relations Murray Rankin were there to witness the event.
CFNR was on location for the signing and later spoke with Melissa Quocksister a communications and community engagement consultant for Kitsumkalum. Quocksister says the treaty ensures the protection and promotion of the community’s cultural traditions, languages, and spiritual practices.
