Members of the Kawenni:io/Gaweni:yo Immersion School board committee have approached Six Nations Elected Council (SNEC) for its support in obtaining a bank loan to help the school build a new facility.
The school currently operates from the second floor of the Iroquois lacrosse arena and has been without a building of its own for over a decade.
Kawenni:io says they are preparing to apply for a $25 million loan from CIBC to construct the facility if SNEC approves to support the school by passing a Band Council Resolution (BCR).
The unofficial deal would see the school enter into an agreement with CIBC that could be from 10-20 years and be responsible in paying back the loan at a monthly rate that ranges between $2,600-$3,700.
During the Jan. 15 general finance meeting, council says an answer on the BCR approval will come in near future but they will continue to work with the school and its efforts to build a new facility.
