Cobourg Police Staff Sergeant John Linney says there have been impaired driving charges in town recently, even on a night when Operation Red Nose was in service.
Operation Red Nose is a free service offered by YMCA Northumberland that gets motorists and their vehicles home safe on selected evenings during the holiday season. Donations are welcomed and support the YMCA’s Strong Communities Campaign.
Kim Jaye, the YMCA’s coordinator of community relations and development, says volunteers are critical for the service. In fact, it had to be cancelled last year on New Year’s Eve due to a lack of volunteers.
During five nights since this season’s Operation Red Nose launch on Nov. 25, there have been 63 rides covering 1,985 kilometres and raising $1,810.
To call for pickup on the nights it’s offered, locals can phone 905-377-1218. There are no reservations. The remaining dates are Dec. 15, 16, 22 and 31.
