More than 2,600 workers from hotels in Montreal, Quebec City and Sherbrooke staged a one-day strike yesterday.
The walk-out, which started early Thursday morning, is the fifth Montreal has seen in the last month.
Workers are part of a coalition of 30 hotel unions across the province, who have been bargaining for a new collective agreement since April. Chief among their demands is a salary increase of 36 per cent over four years.
The Association hôtelière du Grand Montréal (AHGM), meanwhile, says it’s the unions who are refusing to negotiate. In a statement to CKUT, AHGM president Éric Hamel wrote that hotel management “are willing to negotiate tirelessly” and “have been available all week and weekend.”
CKUT sat down with Fernando Almaraz, union president at the Montreal Airport Radisson Hotel, in Montreal’s Place des Arts.
