A new tiny home village will be home for 35 people in Sydney this winter.
The new village has 35 homes, each about the size of a walk-in closet or small tool shed. They are designed for homeless people who spend most of their time at a local shelter in downtown Sydney called the Alley Centre.
Alley Centre spokesperson Christine Porter says their clients are relieved to have shelter for the coming winter, but others will unfortunately have to sleep in tents if they don’t have enough beds to accommodate others having a hard time making ends meet.
The Alley Centre will choose who will occupy the new homes, referred to as pallet shelters because of their size and materials used to construct each unit.
The province announced $7.5 million dollars for pallet shelter villages in regions across the province earlier this year including Sydney. Crews are completing the work on the shelters and they should be ready by next week.
