Over 150 youth will take part in Hands on for Housing, a multi-day conference that aims to engage youth in local conversation around housing while highlighting their abilities in skilled trades. Participants will discuss housing security, and explore employment paths to the skilled trades, November 6-8.
The event at the Grand River Raceway paddocks, takes students and divides them into three groups. The first group involves student leaders who will survey peers regarding housing concerns and priorities in the future. The second group is the skilled trades group that will explore pathways to careers in skilled trades while constructing backyard structures. The third group of students will focus on housing interiors by repurposing secondhand furniture items and setting up rooms and spaces.
Karyn Boscariol, Director of Communications and Resource Development with Habitat for Humanity Guelph Wellington, says the conference takes the place of their traditional fundraising gala because it is critical to engage youth in the housing conversation.
