Twenty years ago, Trevor Kehler started making bags out of old seatbelts, one of which is now featured in the Godzilla TV series — Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Kehler’s name and his work came up when Haida Harper did a search for tote bags made in B.C. The assistant props master was looking for a bag for the character, Mae. Harper has sourced bags from across North America and Europe, but in the end, the props master and director chose Kehler’s bag.
Harper couldn’t tell Kehler what show she was working on when she ordered six identical bags from him. “It was a pain,” Kehler said because everything he makes is unique. According to Harper, he was a joy to work with.
A year-and-a-half later Kehler was at his stall at the Revelstoke farmer’s market, where he saw local Annie Hewitt. She was working on Monarch, too, and she showed Kehler a photo of Kurt Russell holding his bag.
Stoke FM talked to Trevor Kehler about his bag’s journey from Revelstoke to the Godzilla tv set.
