A Halifax group has joined forces to save Centennial Pool.
Trevor Brumwell, chair of the Save Centennial Pool Committee, spoke at a community planning and economic development committee meeting on Thursday about the need for more aquatics centres in Halifax.
At a regional council meeting in June 2022, Coun. Waye Mason put a motion forward to look at potential replacements for Cenntennial Pool, such as affordable housing projects. Mason suggested building a new 50-metre competitive pool off the peninsula and rebuilding the Needham Pool in the city’s north end.
But Brumwell said Centennial Pool is essential to several communities in the area and that the city should look at building an additional 50-metre pool to meet the “interest and demand” in the municipality.
Maggie MacDonald, executive director of HRM Parks and Recreation, told the committee the report on Centennial Pool is anticipated to go to Halifax regional council in the coming months.
