The Haida Nation and the province of British Columbia have signed a first-of-its-kind landmark agreement which affirms that the Haida People have inherited Aboriginal Title to Haida Gwaii.
The Agreement, in English called the “Rising Tide” Haida Title Lands Agreement was voted on by the Haida membership, with more than 500 votes cast and 95% of Haida members being in favour of the agreement.
Contained in the agreement are provisions and recognition of the Haida Nations decision-making power on their territory and that land management decisions under provincial jurisdiction will now be made in line with Haida Aboriginal Title.
