A local women’s organization is looking to make Wellington County one of just six municipalities in Ontario who have declared intimate partner violence an epidemic. Ottawa, Renfrew County, Peel Region, Halton Region and the City of Toronto are the other five.
Cindy McMann of Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis was before council in Wellington County on Thursday detailing the severity of the issue.
McMann shared the organization wants to see intimate partner violence declared an epidemic within the county.
She said doing so would allow staff to attack the problem with a public health framework, work on de-stigmatization and create a shift in mindset.
Hoping for a more “holistic” view of what she called a “growing issue,” McMann said more risk tends to exist in rural communities like Wellington County.
CICW spoke with McMann following her delegation.
