The City of Guelph is supporting “in principle” a plan to build a tiny home encampment but so far a location has not been identified.
Some on council raised concerns about drug use at the proposed encampment.
Volunteer project manager for the Guelph Tiny Homes Coalition, Mike Marcolongo told council drug use would not be allowed in public areas but they would not stop people from using in their units.
The plan calls for central bathroom, kitchen and support services, including addictions treatment.
A Wellington County staff report on the Coalition’s proposal said the group estimated operating costs of $627,000 a year but a similar encampment in the Region of Waterloo costs $2.5 million a year.
Council directed staff to continue to look for a suitable site and report back by early 2025. They are also calling on the federal government to provide more capital funding for such encampments.
