The Glace Bay Food Bank is expecting a spike in demand over the holidays. It currently provides about 400 food hampers per month but that could increase to 500 in December. They handed out 325 hampers in December 2023 containing fresh and non-perishable foods.
The food bank’s director Linda MacRae says they’re seeing more middle class families at the food bank because of the high cost of living. But MacRae worries some people are too embarrassed to ask for help. She refers to a woman who paced outside for two hours, building up the courage to enter the food bank.
MacRae appreciates the community’s generosity but hopes donations match a higher holiday target this year.
Demand is increasing all across the country. Food Banks Canada says the number of people making monthly visits has doubled to two million since 2019.
