The Gané Yohs Health Centre was recognized with the award of excellence in immunization at this year’s Canadian Immunization Conference, despite the health centre’s closure earlier this year after mold was discovered within the facility.
Six Nations Chief, Sherri-Lyn Hill announced the recognition at the Dec. 10 general council meeting. The Canadian Public Health Association states “the award of excellence recognizes the efforts of an individual or group that has made an outstanding contribution at the community level to front-line immunization programs, policy or advocacy”.
Chief Hill said the announcement was “bad timing” as it comes amid the building’s closure.
The closure of Gané Yohs Health Centre was announced closed in late April 2024 and many of the community’s health services have had to be relocated to the White Pines Wellness Centre.
Hill says council is continuing to work with Indigenous Services Canada on short and long term solutions to the health centre’s closure.
