The Freestore on Cortes Island is in urgent need of a new roof, so the organization’s volunteers have started a Gofundme to raise the money. The current leaky building has endured “structural damage,” according to the fundraising page.
Regional Director Mark Vonesch noted that the Freestore is “one of the jewels of Cortes” but that the Strathcona Regional District cannot “put grant-in-aid funding there,” as it is not a non-profit, currently.
The original building was created and funded by local volunteers. The store accepts donations of lightly used, still functioning household items, and stocks the store for anyone to come and take what they please. The community model has been replicated in Vancouver.
