A new documentary which explores the Tamil experience fleeing from the armed conflict in Sri Lanka is about to be released. Since Toronto is home to one of the largest Tamil communities in the world, it is a theme which will resonate with many — especially in Scarborough where many families settled in their escape from their war torn country.
Ray of Hope features Rathika Sitsabaiesan, former MP of Scarborough Rouge River, and is directed by Ryan Singh and Nikki Cole. The premiere of the film is set for May 5.
Sitsabaiesan says that her family came to Canada due to the armed conflict when she was five years old. She grew up in Scarborough and says that the documentary was made to bring the topic into discussion and share the lived experiences of the Tamil community.
CJTM Radio talks to Rathika Sitsabaiesan.
